Our ambition is to lead in location-based data science and machine learning. The VP Data Science will lead a central unit, and will be responsible for: common infrastructure, governance and standards for collecting and cataloguing our data; a common platform for exploring data, performing experiments, training models, and deploying them in a privacy-sensitive way; and leading our community of data scientists, research engineers, and data engineers to create a world-class environment for applied research with significant positive impact on our business results. This role is expected to drive deep engagement by the central team with working data scientists around the company to solve real problems for the business, while creating further leverage by constantly evolving the central platform and infrastructure.
The purpose of the role is to drive the TomTom organization (especially product development) to create more business value from data science, which includes advanced analytics, big data, and machine learning. The VP Data Science role reports to the CTO and is based in Amsterdam.

Work with the CTO, CPO, and SVP Engineering to drive organizational change to create more value from data science and machine learning
Manage the central Data Unit
Attract and recruit talented data scientists
Own the data science job family and to define the performance and recruiting models and career paths
Coach data scientists to help them to develop their skills
Raise TomTom’s general understanding of data science and machine learning, including training data scientists and executives
Contribute to the company strategy to ensure it integrates data science and machine learning opportunities
Develop a data and ML science strategy
Oversee the application of data science and machine learning in our product development activities, assess the use of data science and machine learning in product teams, and influence Product Unit management to achieve greater business value from data science and machine learning, including prioritizing high-impact activities and opportunities
Maintain relationships with higher management, including Product Unit Heads and Product Managers, and influence management to pursue the most impactful data science and machine learning opportunities
Working with Marketing and HR to promote TomTom as a company that effectively uses data science and machine learning, to customers and prospective employees
The right candidate should build trust and relationships within the organization to drive organizational improvement
A recognized data science authority, with supporting credentials
Experience of driving organizational change to take advantage of data science and machine learning, ideally in a company with software-intensive products
Communication and influencing skills: interpersonal, presentational, and written (ability to write clear and concise documents)
