DSM Biotechnology Center (DBC) is the primary location for biotechnological Research and Development and is responsible for the realization of biotechnological innovations and the developments of new bio-products and sustainable bio-production processes. DBC has strong competences in high-throughput screening, microbial strain development, bio-design and modeling, industrial bioprocessing, application, microbiology and analytics. DBC is well connected to the DSM R&D hubs in the US and China and external research institutes and universities.
The Automation & Screening group is part of DBC and works at the interface of molecular biology and robotics. By using high-throughput methods, strain engineering and screening techniques, we improve microbial strain performance to produce diverse products like sweeteners, biofuels and enzymes.
In your role as a technician in the Screening & Automation team you will be using high-throughput (HT) techniques to build microbial strains or screen for improved strain performance in projects. By using HT screening techniques, you will independently prepare and perform experimental work in a safe and effective way in the framework of strain development and screening. This will be in collaboration with members of various project teams with expertise outside of automation.
Preparing reagents and materials to support daily operations and taking care of the laboratory equipment that you use
Planning and performing experimental work with help of scientists or technicians in your team in a safe and effective way
Supporting the use of automated (robotic) protocols and workflows on liquid handlers once fully trained
Entering and processing data of your experiments using standard analysis tools (MS Office). Experience with TIBCO Spotfire or equivalent tools is also an advantage
With help of a Scientist interpret, analyze and report the results of experiments to team members in meetings via presentations and by written reports.
You will also fulfil different team roles and work on multiple projects in parallel.

We are looking to add someone to our team who:
Is a professional through education in the area of microbiology, molecular biology/genetics, life sciences or biotechnology or related expertise.
Is experienced in the one or more of the following areas: microbiology, microbial physiology, and microbiological screening, preferably with bacteria and/or yeast.
Has experience with using laboratory automation and data-management; this is an advantage. Interest in developing in these areas is a prerequisite.
Has plenty of initiative and who likes to learn and work in multidisciplinary teams in an innovative laboratory environment.
Is able to manage multiple on-going tasks including scheduling robotic instrumentation and executing daily workflow processes
Is capable of mentoring and training others on established protocols
Is detail-oriented, a multi-tasker that is collaborative and can fully engage in the execution of the workflows.
