The website and mobile apps are available in over 40 languages, offer more than +28 million total reported listings, and cover +140K destinations in +200 countries worldwide. is currently looking for a world-class Sr Managing Counsel - Payments professional to join the Legal & Public Affairs (LPA) department and be responsible for leading the assessment, interpretation and application of the law governing payments and payments-related matters globally by

    The successful candidate will directly support the Payment and Product teams at in establishing and growing a world-class marketplace product (and other products and initiatives, as directed from time to time).

    Payments is a key component of’s long-term and short-term high-impact strategy, to create a global travel experience marketplace, enable more dynamic pricing optionality and deliver ‘The Connected Trip’.

    As the Sr Managing Counsel - Payments you are responsible for:

    • Providing leadership and guidance to the Payments Product leadership on a full range of legal issues, including commercial contracts, disputes, competition/consumer law, IP law, and applicable regulations (in coordination with other experts in the legal department) to ensure the team’s activities, policies, business practices, and transactions comply with all relevant laws and regulations
    • Procuring and interpreting legal advice to the Payments team (including all product verticals, segments and partnership models), to support the global payment platform for, and ensure compliance with law and regulations
    • Coordinating legal support for the Payments team across different specialisms and areas (including Consumer, Data Protection, Public Affairs) as a single point of contact for the Payments team
    • Supporting the negotiation and drafting of critical vendor contracts to enable the payments product, such as inventory suppliers, optimising for commercial outcomes whilst protecting the company from foreseeable circumstances
    • Enabling a regulatory strategy that supports the Payments Product and also facilitates and enables broader product goals, across a range of travel-related services, triggering regulatory implications including Payment Services Directive in the EU, FX, scheme rules and other global payments regulations
    • Working with other internal stakeholder groups, including Finance and other brands within the Holdings Group, to define and manage a regulatory strategy in support of payments activity and product aspirations
    • As a senior member of the team, fostering collaboration and encouraging best practices in ways of working and knowledge sharing
    • Training the Payments Product team on a variety of legal matters and working with its leadership team to improve risk management and controls
    • Analysing precedents/case law and proposed existing laws and regulations that may impact the Payments Product and its growth and facilitate the implementation of any regulatory requirements
    • Managing external counsel where needed and constantly look for opportunities to improve ways of working/process/controls
    • Working closely with the Public Affairs team on any policy issues related to Payments

    The ideal Sr Managing Counsel - Payments will have:

    • 8+ years’ hands-on experience in a similar position with a Master’s Degree (a Specialised Diploma is a plus)
    • A deep understanding of the following regulatory regimes and of how Payments firms and products are affected is required, including:-
      • The key EU legal and regulatory frameworks (PSD2 / SCA/MFA, AMLD, consumer law) that cover international money transfer, e-commerce, and online platforms
      • Contract relationships and risk and technology (from a regulatory perspective)
      • Permanent establishment and associated structuring and/or tax risks
      • Familiarity with the following financial service products and the Fin-Tech space:-
      • Digital Wallets such as WeChat, ApplePay, AmazonPay etc.
      • Card schemes (Amex, VISA, MC) and other virtual credit card products (VCC) such as those provided by WEX and/or eNett (Optal)
      • Experience identifying and liaising with local counsel around the globe, identifying suitable partners, commissioning work, challenging deliverables etc.
      • Delivering all of the above directly and as part of a matrixed, cross-functional team
    • A strong commercial instinct and helps to apply that knowledge in practical and actionable ways
    • Experience in working as an individual contributor in a ‘hands-on’ legal advisory support role, embedded in the business and working closely with the product and commercial teams
    • Ideally contributed to the public debate around payments regulation, interpretation, enforcement and outcome efficacy (either through their work, published articles, seminars or other forum)
    • Experience in a role with global scope - the lawyer in this role should equally have a global worldview - and be capable of sourcing, critiquing and managing input form a range of internal and external stakeholders to form a view even outside of his or her direct experience
    • Fluency in English; strong written and verbal communication skills - additional language skills are a plus
