Mendix is on a mission to enable anyone in any organization – from the marketing coordinator to the software developer to the CEO – to create things that are transformational for their company. We are fundamentally reinventing the way applications are created and we’re reinventing the future of software development. Sounds ambitious, right? We agree.
Not to brag, but nearly 4,000 organizations worldwide, including KLM, Medtronic, Merck, and Philips, rely on Mendix to build web and mobile applications. Thousands of our customers use our platform to delight their clients and empower their employees. It’s no surprise that we’re a recognized Leader by Gartner and Forrester in a red-hot market expected to exceed $21 billion by 2022. Ok, maybe we did want to brag a little. But we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished…and…we’re humble enough to admit that we need you to make us even more effective.
As User Experience Researcher, you are part of a rapidly growing team of researchers, scaling up research practice across the R&D organization and company-wide. This role will be based in the central research team, working on cross-product research. Working closely with the Lead User Experience Researcher, you will help to define the strategic role of research at Mendix, and participate in shaping research operations. You will also closely collaborate with product and service designers and data analysts to grow our insights capabilities, and conduct generative research that focuses on end-to-end user understanding.
To be successful in this position, you have a proven track record conducting user research activities with product and design teams in a software development context. You are experienced in generative and co-creative user research practices. You thrive in sharing actionable insights in a collaborative environment, with design, data, development, and customer teams, with the ultimate goal to create user-friendly products and services.
Your responsibilities will be:
Investigate and prioritize relevant research topics. Based on company and R&D priorities, ongoing alignment with product managers, product designers and service designers, and your own proactive suggestions, you create and own the research roadmap.
Define, scope, plan, and conduct user experience research. Based on research priorities, you define the scope and research questions, select the appropriate method(s), and create a plan for your research. You align on participant recruitment criteria with your stakeholders and the Research Operations Specialist. When conducting research, you always try to include others: you invite stakeholders to observe fieldwork, or empower others to do research.
Synthesise and share compelling insights that inform product strategy. You are comfortable making trade offs between diving deep into your data, or delivering quick insights. You communicate your research results to your direct stakeholders, but always try to keep a wider audience in mind. You effectively use different channels (e.g. Slack, our User Insight Guild) to create awareness for your research and insights.
Contribute to maturing, expanding and improving our research practice. Research is a new discipline at Mendix, and within the Product Design team. This means that our research team is constantly making an effort to becoming more mature and improving our impact. Examples vary from small and practical (creating templates for research plans, interview guides, etc.) to more fundamental (creating a universal tagging structure, to be used across projects).
Foster collaboration with other disciplines. We truly believe that collaborating cross-disciplines is essential in making an impact. Therefore we expect you to (proactively) foster collaboration with other disciplines: collaboration with product analysts to creating solid insights, collaboration inside and outside R&D in order to tap in to other data sources, but also build strong relationships with product designers, service designers, product managers and the engineering teams in R&D.
About the User Experience Research team:
User Experience Research is a growing subdiscipline, part of the Product Design Team (in the R&D department). We have grown from no researchers to currently 9 research specialists in the past two years, including a Research Operations Specialist. The User Experience Researchers work with one of the R&D units, focusing on product research, or within the central research team, working on cross-product research. To discuss anything relevant to User Experience Researchers, we have a bi-weekly team meeting. We also drive the User Insights Guild, where User Experience Researchers meet with Product Analysts, Service Designers, and anyone else interested in our work and insights. Our research toolset contains SurveyMonkey, Lookback, and Dovetail, but of course, we also use tools like Zoom, Miro, and Dropbox Paper when planning and conducting our research.
About the Design team:
The Design team is a distributed discipline across several units in Boston, Pune, Shanghai and Rotterdam, with many disciplines. From user experience research and service design to brand and product design, the Mendix design team is filled with creatives focused on elevating the user experience across our products. The team is always exploring new ways to be creative and tinkering with new technologies or techniques. We believe that cross-unit and cross-disciplinary collaboration is the key to our success.
