    Senior Product Manager - Insurance

    Context for Role

    As part of our Connected Trip ambition, Booking.com wants to ensure that customers have peace of mind when booking their travel - particularly in uncertain times. Part of this ambition is the delivery of insurance products to give our customers assurance that there is protection, should anything happen.

    Our Transportation unit already has a mature insurance business aimed at offering its car rental customers’ this peace of mind, and we are planning to use this as a springboard on which to build further. We seek to unify our insurance resources, and build a foundation on which to deliver insurance products to all of our segments, including: Accommodations, transportation, flights and attractions.

    Booking.com has ambitious growth plans for the insurance business. Example opportunities include traditional areas such as travel protection, alongside new categories, such as home-sharing protection for our vacation rental segment.

    The key strategic aims are to: Build an insurance operating model that can deliver to our insurance requirements, and to use this to expand and grow a global footprint of general insurance product offerings throughout the Group. Through innovation and industry sector knowledge and single-threaded focus, the challenge is to substantially enhance the group’s customer Insurance experience and drive a profitable account.

    Role Profile

    We are seeking an ambitious senior product manager to drive the expansion of our insurance product portfolio, working in close collaboration with teams across the Accommodation & Trips verticals.

    Responsible for day-to-day execution of strategy, the senior product manager will lead on the design, development and implementation of innovative new insurance products in the home and vacation rental, flights and attractions sectors.

    Reporting to the Insurance Product Director, this is initially an Individual Contributor role, where the candidate will need to be able to deliver through effective collaboration with teams for whom they do not have direct line management responsibility. Their ability to inspire others behind a clear product vision and manage a complex and diverse group of stakeholders, spanning product, engineering, operations, customer service, finance, compliance, risk, and legal, will be key to success.

    Candidates should be comfortable presenting to senior management audiences and externally will be a key liaison between Booking.com product teams, and those of our external insurance partners.

    In this role you will need to effectively balance rapid delivery of commercially successful insurance solutions whilst maintaining the high compliance standards expected of a market leading brand, so previous experience of working with regulated products would be an advantage.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead the expansion of a key part of our insurance product portfolio, working in close collaboration with teams across the Accommodation & Trips verticals.
    • Responsible for driving the short and long term roadmap for the insurance products in the home & vacation rental, flights and attractions sectors.
    • Provide cross functional leadership and support acting as the bridge between the product teams in the verticals outlined above and the insurance function.
    • Deliver new product opportunities to market through effective collaboration with multiple product teams within the target verticals for whom you will not have direct line management responsibility.
    • Develop a deep understanding of current and future user needs in respect of covering the risks associated with travel and how those needs can be met through the insurance product portfolio.
    • Building of business cases and supporting business models to be able to understand and communicate the impact of new insurance product opportunities to the wider business.
    • Responsible for data analysis, experimentation, and reporting on their product lines to drive changes and improvements to the user experience post launch.
    • Ensure a strong focus on monitoring and measurement of key Insurance KPI’s to inform our commercial relationship with our underwriters and global insurance partners.
    • Supporting and assisting the Product Director in the driving of track level strategy including vision setting, roadmap planning, and influencing wider business unit strategy.
    • Ensure teams are developing products in accordance with all relevant insurance regulatory and compliance guidelines.
    • Serve as the primary contact for all teams working on the product for information, work prioritization, and decision-making.
    • Responsible for ensuring a high quality user experience with our products by applying technical awareness and understanding of technical risks.
    • Contribute to the evolution of best practices within the insurance team.
    • Actively participate in product networks and the craft community outside of their own track.
    • Contributing to the craft community and company wide efforts where needed (e.g. recruitment activity generating leads, doing phone interviews).
    • Proactively invests time and energy into improving Product Management as a craft in Booking.com.

    Skills & Experience

    • Educated to degree level or equivalent.
    • Minimum of 5 years of relevant product experience, ideally including managing regulated products.
    • Ability to work in an entrepreneurial ‘start-up’ type environment with moving targets and ambitions.
    • Experience in the design and launch of new products, ideally in the insurance or financial services sector.
    • Track record in managing cross-functional stakeholders with competing objectives and delivering through effective collaboration with teams for whom you have no direct line management responsibility.
    • Commercially astute, with experience of constructing and presenting business cases, supporting models, and financial projections.
    • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills with the ability to achieve mutually agreeable solutions by staying adaptable, communicating ideas in clear coherent language, and practising active listening.
    • Well developed analytical skills - Able to interpret data and trends, diagnose problems, and recommend effective action plans to resolve issues.
    • Excellent degree of communication skills - Being able to effectively communicate both the strategic vision and specific details to stakeholders at all levels.
    • Creativity and curiosity - A creative problem solver with a deep curiosity about our business and products.
