    Job description
    Cell-free fetal DNA which is present in the maternal circulation during pregnancy has been successfully used as a versatile tool for noninvasive prenatal genotyping. Routine determination of fetal rhesus D status employing cell-free fetal DNA has been successfully used for the management of hemolytic disease of the newborn. In the current project we aim to develop novel approaches to further improve current methods for fetal blood-based diagnostics. To this end we will combine a recently developed novel cell isolation approach with state-of-the-art next generation sequencing approaches. The overall goal of the project is to further extend our current portfolio of cell-free fetal DNA based assays using this newly developed platform.

    Work environment

    The current project is part of a recently established partnership between the recently established research-campus Health & Innovation District (HiD-campus) Amsterdam and a Japanese MNC. The HiD-campus has recently been initiated by Sanquin to promote innovative development in the area of Transfusion Medicine, Hematology, Immunology and Oncology. Activities on HiD campus are closely coordinated with research-activities and infrastructure at Sanquin. The research scientist will be employed by Sanquin and will use the research-infrastructure of Sanquin and the HiD-campus to further develop the fetal diagnostics research program of the Japanese multinational company. Research-facilities include highly advanced next generation sequencing platforms, state-of-the-art FACS facilities; access to high resolution microscopy and mass spectrometry is available for this project. Cutting-edge molecular and cellular technologies provide an excellent opportunity to perform innovative research thereby developing novel diagnostic platforms for patients with hematological disorders.

    Qualifications and skills

    • You hold a PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences, Medical Biology, Hematology, Genome Medicine or any other field that is relevant for the current project;
    • You are highly motivated and have a keen interest in immunology, hematology and molecular biology as well as affinity for the development of novel technologies;
    • You have hands-on practical laboratory experience, such as genomics, cell sorting, bioinformatics and other molecular and immunological techniques;
    • You are able to work both independently and within a team;
    • You have excellent communication and presentation skills. Fluency in spoken and written English is a prerequisite;
    • It would be a plus if you know about the regulatory environment like IVDR etc;
