    Project Assistant (GS-4)

    The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention, which entered into force on 29 April 1997. The OPCW, with its 193 Member States, oversees the global endeavor to permanently and verifiably eliminate chemical weapons.

    The ultimate aim of the OPCW is to achieve our vision of a world free of chemical weapons in which chemistry is used for peace, progress, and prosperity, and to contribute to international security and stability, general and complete disarmament, and global economic development. Under the OPCW's oversight 96% of the chemical weapons stockpiles declared by possessor States have been verifably destroyed.

    The OPCW was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013 for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons.

    Job Summary

    We are looking for a Project Assistant to join the Implementation Support Branch.

    For this post, you will need strong knowledge and experience in providing administrative and secretarial support to the branch in the implementation of its projects and activities. The Project Assistant will support respective Substantive Officers in maintaining contacts with other organisations and subsidiary bodies. What is more, you will act as a focal point in providing information about workshops, seminars, courses, and other projects.

    The ideal candidate can flourish within a multi-cultural environment, should show integrity, and demonstrate professional competence.

    Main Responsibilities

    The Project Assistant will have the following duties:

    • To provide administrative assistance in the organizing activities and events;
    • Liaise with relevant internal units and State Parties in order to coordinate necessary actions;
    • Act as s focal point relating to information about workshops, seminars, courses, etc.;
    • To prepare and to manage documentation;
    • To provide logistical information and support;
    • To provide administrative support and coordination in different settings and arrangements.

    Qualifications and Experience



    High school diploma or equivalent diploma of secondary education.

    Knowledge and Experience


    • At least three years’ experience of providing administrative and clerical support for project activities in a multicultural environment, with ability to interact and communicate with different target groups;
    • Knowledge and experience in providing administrative support for different implementing modalities of capacity building activities, with practical experience in supporting/coordinating organization of on-line/remote events;
    • Demonstrated experience in a customer-servicing role, with ability to liaise and negotiate for expected results;
    • Practical experience in documentation, information/data management, archive and search engine in support of project administration.


    • Previous work experience within a multilateral, international organisation would be an asset;
    • Experience in dealing with different internal and external stakeholders in project administration is highly desirable.

    Skills and Competencies

    • Computer literacy (MS Office applications, MS Teams and IT related applications/platforms) for event management;
    • Ability to plan, organise and manage conflicting priorities;
    • Tact, accuracy, discretion and respect for confidentiality;
    • Excellent communication skills;
    • Ability to draft in a clear and concise manner;
    • Strong problem-solving skills;
    • Good inter-personal skills;
    • Ability to work harmoniously in a multi-cultural environment and independently with minimum supervision.


    Fluency in English is essential and a good working knowledge of one of the other official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish) is desirable.

    Additional Information

    Staff members in the General Services category are normally recruited and paid on a local basis.

    This appointment is for the duration of two years, with a six-month probationary period, and is subject to the OPCW Staff Regulations and Interim Staff Rules.

    The Director-General retains the discretion to not make any appointment to this vacancy, to make an appointment at a lower grade, or to make an appointment with a modified job description. Several vacancies may be filled.
