    Principal Engineer - Corporate Technology

    Corporate Technology

    We have a great opportunity for a Principal Engineer to work out of our Amsterdam HQ and help us creatively think through how we do things in Corporate Technology.

    Corporate Technology is an internal facing IT Support and Engineering team. We design, build and maintain all of the platforms and end user devices that our Booking.com workforce use day-to-day, so they can in-turn deliver great travel products to our customers. We have a unique set of tools that we are trying to harmonize with the end goal of making a simple and reliable experience that delights our workforce.

    Principal Engineers are the technical leaders involved in key business initiatives that drive the continuous improvements and enhancements of Booking’s systems and infrastructure. We are looking for someone that will feel ownership around the outcome but also the process. As part of our technical leadership, you’ll be involved in overarching strategic planning, while also serving as a role model, a mentor and someone who oversees and executes technical tasks with excellence.

    • Leads the design of our corporate platform ecosystem
    • Implements technical strategic decisions in cross functional teams
    • Serves as a tech lead on large scale projects
    • Works closely with product owners and engineers to design, implement, continually improve highly scalable applications and services
    • Ensures that our infrastructure stays current by reducing technical debt, searching for bottlenecks and preparing for scaling and guiding more junior members of the team in this topic.
    • Describes the implications of changing an existing system or adding a new system to a specific area, by having a broad, high-level understanding of the infrastructure and architecture of our systems and guide more junior members of the team in this topic.
    • Helps grow the business and/or accelerate software development by applying engineering techniques (e.g. prototyping, spiking and vendor evaluation) and standards and guide more junior members of the team in this topic.
    • Reviews and verifies performance of corporate systems and network infrastructure by continuously monitoring appropriate observability metrics, business KPIs and capacity planning and guide more junior members of the team in this topic.
    • Secures corporate systems and network infrastructure by following company and industry security best practices and guide more junior members of the team in this topic.
    • Makes sure our systems and processes are compliant and guide more junior members of the team in this topic
    • Maintains a current understanding of industry and technology trends
    • Coaches, guides and improves the overall performance of stakeholders and colleagues at all levels, when appropriate, by sharing experience, knowledge and approaches to work

    • Be a (hands on) System architect. You understand how the various systems and components connect and interact, where the risks are and what trade-offs entail
    • Proven hands-on experience in designing, building, improving and operating high-performance, highly-available and scalable distributed systems in fast growing environment
    • Expert understanding around corporate technology solutions. Expert level skills in areas like Operating systems, Voice systems, identity Systems and compliance requirements, End user support, Networking, Video Conferencing, Cloud based technologies, Saas platforms.
    • Be an Impact multiplier. Whether through processes you design, best practices you establish, code you write, learnings you share, organization changes you influence, or initiatives you lead, the outcomes of your work should move the entire organization forward.
    • Ability to convince, provide work direction and leadership to colleagues who do not directly report to this role
    • Experience mentoring and growing more junior engineers and support staff, not through reporting lines, but through thorough and convincing communication is preferred
    • Excellent communication skills. Demonstrated ability to use data to influence and drive decisions
    • Strong customer focus and passion for doing the right thing for the customer
    • Extensive experience in defining and implementing technical roadmaps that influence multiple tech teams
