In order to support the objectives of focusing on the customer, personalisation is key to the augmented customer support and enhancing the booking experience. This requires the development of a personalisation engine, and the deep integration of this engine into a complex systems landscape, like the main web pages of Booking.com The Product Foundations & Help Technologies department is in the process of bootstrapping a team specifically for this building, with a Engineering Manager being the leader of this team. The heavy lift of the modularisation of the b.com homepage and addition of personalised content requires a strong skill-set that this EM position will bring.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a strong, hands-on Engineering Manager. The focus of this role is to manage, coach and develop an engineering team, ensuring the development of both the individuals and team in line with organizational objectives. You should be a technically strong role model that can help your team advance and develop. The role requires analyzing technology and talent needs together with market demand. You will work closely with other leaders, key stakeholders and tech teams to determine feasibility, effectiveness, scalability and time-to-market for new and existing products.
This is an advanced engineering role on the intersection of business and technology; requiring knowledge of building highly scalable and resilient services as well as strong ability to connect engineering with business objectives.
Technology, Craft & Delivery
Experience in designing and architecting systems and APIs, dealing with high traffic
Mastery in technology leadership
Engineering delivery, quality and practices within own team
Delivery of the wider engineering strategic objectives
Embed agile ways of working and company values within the team
Ability to get into the technical detail (where required) and to coach, support and mentor the team
Adhere to the default principles for architecture, quality and non-functional requirements

Learn new technologies and keep abreast of existing technologies to be able to share learnings and apply these to a variety of projects when needed

5+ years of experience in software development
At least 3 years of experience leading and managing a team of engineers in a fast-paced and complex environment
Experience with Java is a must
Experience with Kafka, Cassandra and/ or MySQL is a plus.
Experience in defining and upholding SLOs/KPIs and conducting architecture reviews for systems.
Very good understanding of APIs design and queues
A deep understanding of software development in a team, and a track record of developing and shipping software
Good technical background in handling big scale projects
Experience in working on products with a large customer base and company wide impact
Strong technical skills (Coding & System design) with ability to get hands-on with your team if needed
Strong people management skills and experience in dealing with complex people issues
Excellent communicator with strong stakeholder management experience, good commercial awareness and technical vision
You have driven successful technical, business and people related initiatives that improved productivity, performance and quality
You are a humble and thoughtful technology leader, you lead by example and gain your teammates’ respect through actions, not the title
