Engineering Manager - Order Promise, Group Digital, Ingka Group

Hej! My name is Ansgar and I’m leading our engineering teams in Order Promise at IKEA. As we are building our new hub in Amsterdam, I want to get to know you and I love to get the chance to convince you why it’s great to join us on our journey.

At IKEA we have a vision to help more of the many people to have an affordable and better everyday life at home and be more convenient to where they are. At the same time, we aspire to become truly people and planet positive.

The challenge of transforming such a global iconic brand is breathtaking – You can read about INGKA’s ‘10 jobs in 3 years’, 5 of them are underpinned by the amazing work we will do in Fulfilment, Logistics & Inventory Management.

We strongly believe that diverse engineering teams can really grow in an environment where cross-functional product-engineering-teams are empowered to make decisions and solve the problems on hand as autonomous teams. We believe that true innovation comes from co-creation, taking educated risks and how we dare to fail in safe surroundings.

We believe that you, as us, thrive when meeting incredible people that are on the same mission at IKEA. People that are very humble, supportive and absolutely committed to lead home-furnishing retail into the future and create a better life for more of the many people, by putting the customer at the heart of all we do.

    • You have a relentless passion and vision for meeting the customer promise and at the same time you strive for engineering excellence and help others to achieve it.
    • That you have a strong engineering background and the ability to give guidance empathically. All to serve as a leader and motivate engineers to be outcome focused and to take that educated risks while we learn and improve on our journey.
    • That you are inclusive, humble and passionate about creating a constantly learning organization which is able to leverage diversity to archieve our goals.
    • That you dare to build, grow and retain happy and focused teams that are resilient at their heart and can grow and excel in distributed and constantly changing environments.
    • You are passionate about our vision and values – Values like togetherness, simplicity and lead by example are all a natural part of your everyday working life at IKEA.
    • Leading by example you motivate engineers to build the highest standard of software using agile engineering techniques like XP helping us to continuously build confidence with our customers, operations and stakeholders.
    • Even though you might not be coding most of your time, we are looking for leaders who actually have the desire to collaborate with the teams and grab the keyboard from time to time or join architectural discussions.
    • You have learnt the lessons and you can inspire others why it is important:
    • to leverage domain driven design and loosely coupled architectures
(event driven, APIs as 1st class citizens)
    • to strive for high automation in our build and deployment processes
    • to take responsibilities inside all our teams for quality, security and monitoring
    • to be notified about incidents before our customers/users notice
    • to have a DevOps mentality while building and scaling enterprise technology that is running on global scale 24/7

    • To create a one team atmosphere between all co-workers in engineering, product, data science, business development, operations etc. Focused on delivering value together, cross-functional.
    • To be resilient and empathetic in the face of the challenge of doing heart surgery on the IKEA business – transforming our current landscape into something for the next evolution of IKEA.

    • To be able to find the right agile product approach while focusing on team autonomy.

    • To be cost conscious and take responsibility for the total technology costs.

    • To bring your whole self to work and have fun building a better everyday life for the many.

As an Engineering Manager you will help our product engineering teams to excel in tackling their day2day challenges. You will act as servant leader by supporting our teams to mature and individuals to grow as well-rounded engineers. Always striving for engineering excellence.

All this while we build and run the technology that underpins our global ~40Bn € business. Across approximately 370 Stores, 40+ fulfillment centers, click & collect solutions, last mile delivery and services like installation in our customers homes. While minimizing the impact on our planet you will be part of creating a new IKEA, by building the capability to extend dynamically flex fulfilment across all our network, buildings, transport and partners – responding to situations like COVID-19 pandemic in near real time to meet our customers’ needs.

You will help us to unlock our plans to:
    • Contribute to our sustainability goals by offering customers the ability to recycle and rent/subscribe IKEA products.

    • Build new engaging city store formats providing convenience to our customers.

    • Simplify and automate flows on a global scale to meet our cost-conscious objectives thus providing IKEA products to the many at a sustainable cost.

Together we will transform the current landscape into a modern technology stack which will
    • enable us to test and learn quickly to meet our customers’ demands &

    • provide cloud native, highly available, resilient & secure services at a global scale.

We are big believers in autonomous product engineering teams and therefore we are looking for engineering leaders who enable their teams to act with autonomy and help them to make the right decisions and take educated risks, responsibly. As we are at the beginning of our journey there will be plenty of space to make those autonomous educated decisions.

The home office for this role will be Amsterdam, there might be limited travel globally to meet your stakeholders, teams and partners. We believe a healthy and flexible life balance is important, so together we will strive to create a work environment where you feel in control of your life balance, can be yourself, grow and excel in both your personal and professional life.

We’re the ones who make it possible for people to have a smarter life at home and a hassle-free and rewarding shopping experience. Together we work to find new digital solutions for every business need to help make IKEA a great and efficient place to work. We like to think of ourselves as innovative and modern, and we believe that nothing would actually work without us.

In this role you will report to the Product Engineering Manager of the Order Promise domain. The role is based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
