Director, Strategy & Business Development - Philips Ventures
In this role you have the opportunity to
Foster external innovation strategies & start-up collaborations across Philips’ businesses. You will be a key enabler in shaping and operationalizing Philips’ external innovation strategy, by guiding business strategies to engage with ecosystem partners and venture investing models to complement internal R&D roadmaps. In this role you will partner with and coach business and market teams on how to create win-win economic models and manage risk-return on R&D and venture investments, focusing on digital & platform businesses. The role is highly external-facing acting as a ‘face of Philips’ across the Philips Ventures portfolio and pipeline, as well as at speaking events. In the work, you will be working closely with Business and Market Leadership plus their teams, as well as colleagues within Philips Ventures and our Strategy & Business Development community.
You are responsible for
Informing business investment & partnering agenda, translating strategy (CAPs, GAPs) into “develop” and “partner” requirements
Landscaping & sourcing partner opportunities across relevant businesses & strategies
Facilitating business development & partnership opportunities with start-up companies across diverse range of business models (e.g. buy-from, refer, resell, integrated solution, marketplace)
Working closely with Business, Market and Functional stakeholders to identify key questions to address, scope well-supported solutions with specific recommendations that will enable the Management Team(s) to make critical go-no-go decisions in a factual and considerate manner
Running review of BD projects with management, making recommendations for action and ensures appropriate follow-up by management to achieve approved program, project objectives – identifies, tracks relevant metrics of success and periodically reports to management team on status
Orchestrating Philips support and prioritized collaborations with portfolio of invested start-ups
Identifying possible investment opportunities & requirements across partner landscape
Represent Philips as board member of select venture investments
Maintaining and continuously optimizing a “standard process” to create repeatable contracting models and go-to-market approaches; goal to reduce level of effort and throughput time per agreement
Partnering across Philips Ventures team to ensure appropriate geographic and business coverage for opportunity mix; actively leveraging collaboration & reporting tools to support collaboration (Affinity, Teams, Qlick)
Tightly connecting to the broader Philips Business Development network to ensure "one face to the partner" approach and unlock Philips wide inorganic opportunities (e.g. "horizontals")
Corporate Venture Business Development Leads are responsible for the strategy & partnering aspects of the Philips Ventures organization. Responsibilities range from helping business leaders re-think their businesses for a digital-first world, to representing Philips’ interests across the start-up ecosystem. Success in the role will balance ‘readying internal teams for external engagement and external teams for Philips engagement). Typical projects could include identification and mapping of new sensor partners for the Patient Monitoring business or AI partners for the imaging informatics business, conducting partnership meetings and leading negotiations, resulting in partnership contracts.

Philips Ventures is the Corporate Venture Capital organization. The team consists of investment and business development professionals responsible for all Philips venture investing activities. The global Philips Ventures team is part of the Strategy, M&A and Partnerships (SMAP) organization. It is structured around Philips’ four global innovation hubs located in Amsterdam, Boston, Shanghai & Bangalore. The SMAP team consists of top-level finance, strategy & business development professionals with wide-ranging backgrounds, nationalities, and competencies. The team works with Philips businesses, market organizations and functional teams as a center of expertise for setting strategic direction, market analysis, investment and acquisitions. The team is seen as a talent feeder into the broader Philips organization.
To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience
A talented strategic and entrepreneurial thinker with a digital-first mindset and solid (and proven) Business Development skills, that can support Philips Leadership to make decisions on strategic areas for venture investment and collaboration alongside core innovation priorities. You are externally oriented and are able to blend external opportunities with Philips Capabilities, Assets and Positions into meaningful and sustainable value creation. To successfully deliver in the role, candidate requirements include:
10+ years of experience as Business Developer, Product Manager or Consultant in HealthTech and or Consumer Health & Wellbeing – up to speed on HealthTech Businesses, Technologies and Markets
Experience with both established and start-up organizations, notably in technical development, commercial approaches and functional systems readiness.
Strong business modeling acumen and financial modeling skills to underpin multi-stakeholder business models
Deep experience with business development & partnership “instruments” (contract types and supporting functional diligence requirements) and how to apply them on a case-by-case basis – e.g. indirect vs direct procurement, commercial reseller & referral agreements
Technically oriented, able to articulate and value API-first partnering strategies and supporting business process automation
Ability to handle multiple projects and priorities in dynamic environment with diverse priorities, proven track record of delivering tangible and value-added business impact – great at execution: results-driven, detail-oriented, organized self-starter
Proven track record of successfully building external networks and developing (converting) a pipeline of inorganic growth opportunities with leading, complementary industry peers
Comfortable in making (facilitating) decisions in fast paced, international and dynamic environment. Proven impact in driving, implementing decisions in “matrixed”, multinational organization(s)
Willingness to travel (25%) of the time, on average
Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with an ability to speak effectively to business development leaders, executives, product managers and engineers
