In this way Unilever creates critical mass in expertise areas to ensure that our new technologies ultimately bring breakthrough innovations to the markets that are good for People and Planet.

    It is Unilever’s ambition to reach 1 billion turnover in the next 5 to 7 years from plant based products of which plant-based meat is a significant part. To achieve that ambition, we are strengthening our technical capability and therefore we are looking for people with specific skills in this area.


    The Science & Technology (S&T) team in the Foods & Refreshment (F&R) division is an agile team of enthusiastic world-class scientists with a clear purpose:

    THE JOB:

    As a Unilever Biotechnology Manager, you will play a key role in driving and executing a research programmes to deliver biotechnology sourced novel functional ingredients and materials of strategic interest to the Unilever Foods & Refreshment Division (F&R). In particular, for the development of even more sustainable meat replacers for the Vegetarian Butcher. You will keep track of advances that would allow new biotechnological routes for the production of existing ingredients wwithin given cost constraints. You will be part of a team that works primarily through external collaborations with suppliers and academic groups and interacts widely with many other Unilever teams.


    • Lead the development of proposals for opportunities to source new ingredients and develop novel routes for the production of existing materials with a major impact on sustainability for The Vegetarian Butcher

    • Carry out laboratory work to support the research programme. Primarily biochemical analysis of proteins and their interactions with other raw materials

    • Work with colleagues across Unilever to ensure successful leads could be exploited commercially, how they would be claimed and declared on pack, and their consumer perception

    • Provide expertise in Biotechnology / Biosciences across the F&R program for relevant ingredients


    • An MSc or higher in biotechnology / molecular biology / systems biology / bioengineering or similar subject matters

    • Proven experience (i.e. >5 years) of leading research programs in biotechnology / bio-based approaches for novel ingredients

    • Experience in leading external partnerships and working effectively in complex and diverse ecosystems

    • Good influencing and communication skills; ability to convince and defend own agenda in front of internal stakeholders (within R&D)

    • Ability to work in cross-disciplinary teams and in multi-cultural environments, utilising an established network
