About the Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven Backend Developer to join us in the App Marketing team in our Amsterdam HQ. In this position you will contribute to our mission to become a #1 travel app in the world. We do that by acquiring new customers, creating high quality landing pages and making it easier for customers to get started with the Booking.com app by providing a smooth onboarding experience and building deep-linking services.

As a Backend Developer you will be responsible for developing world-class solutions for tracking and measurement of our app acquisition efforts and the apps lifecycle by leveraging our Big Data infrastructure, for monitoring and addressing performance and security, and for developing customer-focused app landing experiences. You will work side-by-side with backend developers, app developers, and product owners to create new features, test your own ideas, and push changes live for billions of users. You will be responsible for:
Rapidly developing next-generation scalable, flexible, and high-performance data pipelines, with end-to-end ownership by monitoring and adjusting SLIs and SLOs
Continuously improving our services by identifying flaws and potential issues, transforming monolith parts into services
Developing and delivering distributed systems and services per business needs
Developing new business ideas or optimisations of products and prioritisation for the highest business impact
Collaborating with adjacent teams and other stakeholders to deliver on business objectives
Mentoring and growing other software developers
Contributing to the growth of Booking.com through interviewing, on-boarding, or other recruitment efforts.
We are looking for self-starters who are great at solving problems, who initiate discussions, are solutions-oriented, customer focused and believe that any challenge can be scaled with the right mindset and tools.
A minimum of 3 years of experience in web development.
Strong working knowledge and experience with two or more server-side programming languages, including Java
Solid understanding of Service Oriented Architecture and Microservices
Experience with building scalable data pipelines in distributed environments with technologies such as Hadoop, Cassandra, Kafka, Spark, HBase, MySQL, etc.
Experience with design, development, testing, and monitoring of large-scale and data-intensive systems
Passionate learners who aren’t afraid of new tools and technologies to build a great end-to-end customer experience.
Excellent communicator who is able to influence and cooperate with people at all levels.
High level of ownership - own your systems end-to-end and are comfortable performing incident management.
Having experience mentoring, coaching and training newer and less experienced team members is an advantage
