    As an Associate General Counsel Commercial, you will play a key role within the IDEXX Legal & Compliance Team’s Commercial Group, leading a four-person EMEA team, engaging in global legal practice groups, and providing core, front-line legal support for IDEXX’s EMEA business. You will report directly to the Deputy General Counsel & Global Chief Commercial Counsel.

    The Legal Commercial Group partners with all IDEXX lines of business and customer-facing organizations, providing strategic, business-minded legal solutions for customer, supplier, and distributor relationships, advertising, marketing and other critical commercial matters. Working closely with colleagues in Corporate, IP, Compliance, Litigation/Employment, and Operations, the Legal Commercial Group provides seamless legal support for commercial issues globally. With a significant focus on IDEXX’s Companion Animal Group (CAG) Commercial and Corporate Accounts teams, geographic priorities include Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands.

    In this Role

    The Associate General Counsel works closely with business partners throughout EMEA to provide practical solutions to legal issues across a broad range of commercial matters. The focus is on complex commercial transactions with customers and other commercial counterparties and requires adroitness and versatility in dealing with related IP, licensing, sales, competition/antitrust, advertising/marketing, privacy, import-export, corporate and other compliance and operational issues. Of equal import, in the role:

    You will collaborate closely with the Legal Operations Team to develop and enhance legal infrastructure (processes, tools, technology platforms); and
    You will play a significant part in external and internal risk identification, assessment and remediation.

    More generally, the role involves regular interaction with EMEA and global business and functional leadership in a complex business environment incorporating R&D, manufacturing, services, direct sales, distribution, purchasing, and marketing across all IDEXX lines of business (Companion Animal; Livestock, Poultry, & Dairy; Water; and OPTI). Additional responsibilities include coordination and integration of specialty legal support from the Legal Team’s Centers of Excellence, addressing regulatory issues (principally environmental and product registration/licensing), engaging in litigation strategy, providing legal support in compliance matters, and overseeing outside counsel.


    What you need to Succeed

    You have master’s degree in Law or better, with top academic credentials required;
    You are a Bar member in good standing in at least one U.S. or European jurisdiction; multiple admissions welcomed;
    You bring 12-15+ years of sophisticated, cross-border legal experience, ideally both in private practice and in-house, in a multicultural context, in a core substantive area (e.g., commercial, corporate, business transactional) with extensive client interaction;
    Minimal 3+ years leading multi-person legal teams;
    Experience in a matrixed, multinational, public company environment highly valued;
    Excellent core legal skills, including commercial/contract structuring, drafting and negotiation; demonstrated skill in fostering and developing such skills in other team members;
    Grapples successfully with complexity, understands patterns in data and their implications, able to translate complex legal issues into practical guidance for business stakeholders and legal colleagues;
    Excellent organizational, business, and communication skills, including financial analytical ability, project management, and facility in both one-to-one and group contexts;
    Demonstrated record of successful people leadership, including supervision and mentoring;
    Ability to use, improve and promote legal operations tools including contract lifecycle management, workflow, and e-billing/matter management platforms;
    Experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Teams;
    You have emotional intelligence, humility, willingness to learn and take and receive feedback constructively:
    High ethical standards.
