The Molecular Neuroscience group is seeking a highly qualified and motivated assistant professor to conduct collaborative research and teaching in molecular neurodegeneration. The proposed program will focus in connecting neurophysiology, neuropathology, molecular biology and (prote)omic approaches. This is an essential addition to the respective fields that are currently lead by four different teams within Molecular Neuroscience at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS). The new assistant professor position will function to add in fundamental and translational approaches in order to be able to deliver the needed integration points to solve complex problems in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.
Previous research within SILS, have led to the identification of specific targets which regulate dopamine neuron survival, which could contribute to a future treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Similar research has been performed inhouse, which elucidates how neuronal transmission is affected in Alzheimer’s disease. Therapeutic intervention to halt these progressive neurodegenerative diseases would be a significant breakthrough. To stimulate and facilitate such breakthroughs, which require in-vitro models, mouse mutants, and data obtained from human neurons the newly appointed assistant professor will be at the center of collaborations between the SILS-CNS groups and at the forefront of education, training future scientists to tackle these detrimental diseases.
What are you going to do?
Teach (and development of education) in BSc and MSc programs of the Biomedical Sciences.
Supervise BSc and MSc students for individual assignments (including research internships, literature reviews, etc.).
Research activities and state of the art developments in neurodegeneration, neurophysiology and proteomics in connection to the educational demands.
Be active in your research line, resulting in scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Be active in attracting of external funding.
What do we require?
PhD in life sciences with a focus on molecular neurosciences.
At least four years of experience in the field of brain development and pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases.
Experience with neurophysiology approaches.
Experience in the field (nano) proteomics and the analysis of neurons in a quantitative and qualitive manner.
Enthusiasm for, and dedication to, teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels and in developing and organising education.
Experience with supervising students for internship and thesis research.
Willingness to contribute to attracting external funding.
Fluency and excellent communication in English, both written and spoken (level C1); non-native Dutch speakers must be willing to obtain A2 level proficiency in the Dutch language.
SILS expect its staff to acquire this sufficient fluency in the Dutch language within three years of the start of the employment contract.
Ambition to grow in the field of educational management.
Responsible personality, who is able to work individually as well as in a team.
Our ideal candidate also has:
at least two years of postdoc experience, either nationally or internationally;
a prior funding record appropriate for their career stage.
Within the Faculty of Science, newly appointed assistant professors follow a didactic training trajectory, which upon completion results in a qualification for academic teaching (basiskwalificatie onderwijs, BKO) within two years.
We offer an employment contract for 38 hours a week, for 18 months preferably starting on 1 March 2022 during which you should show your competence in science and teaching. After a positive assessment of your performance this will be converted into a permanent contract.
Your salary, depending on your relevant work experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between €3.807 to €5.922 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. A favourable tax agreement, the 30% ruling, may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) is applicable.
