In this way Unilever creates critical mass in expertise areas to ensure that our new technologies ultimately bring breakthrough innovations to the markets that are good for People and Planet.

    It is Unilever’s ambition to reach 1 billion turn over in the next 5 to 7 years from plant-based products of which plant-based meat is a significant part. To achieve that ambition, we are strengthening our technical capability and therefore we are looking for people with specific skills in this area.


    We currently have a vacant position of Plant Meat Structuring assistant manager. The vacancy is within the Foods Product & Process group in the Science & Technology (S&T) department, based in the Hive. The S&T team in the Foods & Refreshment (F&R) division is an agile team of enthusiastic world-class scientists with a clear purpose:

    At the end of 2018 Unilever acquired The Vegetarian Butcher, which has the mission to become the biggest butcher in the world by making plant-meat the standard. The Vegetarian Butcher aims to provide meat-lovers vegan alternatives without any compromise. The person we are looking for will work on plant meat structuring to make this vision a reality.

    The main purpose of this position is to lead work streams on development of new plant-based meat structures by doing experiments at lab and/or pilot plant scale, finding correlations between key parameters of ingredient properties and product characteristics using for example Excel models. The focus is on identifying and applying current and new technologies to accomplish project objectives. Where possible or relevant new technologies can be co-developed with third parties. Designing, execution, interpretation and reporting of these R&D activities are core elements of the role.


    • Development of novel plant meat structures (e.g. longer, firmer fibers, colour systems) based on protein mixes and blends & lead projects or work streams in these defined areas of plant meat, working according to agile principles

    • Design, conduct, interpret and report of experiments, at lab, pilot plant and factory scale and provide design rules of meat analogues

    • Collaborate with colleagues inside and outside the team, suppliers, and other external partners; actively searching for solutions developed by others

    • Ability to work with 3rd parties to leverage external innovations

    • Ensure compliance to the Unilever Code of Business Principles and all SHE/QA policies.


    • Education: preferred Food Technology, Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering, (Preferred MSc)

    • Relevant 5 +years of experience within R&D (preferably in foods) Work experience in similar area is preferred but not necessary

    • Technical & entrepreneurial mindset applied to solutions and continuously learn and improve

    • Leadership, planning & collaboration skills while being able to work in a multi-functional and multicultural environment

    • Good communication skills in English, both spoken and written
