    Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in Photochemistry

    Assistant, Associate or Full Professor in Photochemistry

    Faculty/Services: Faculteit der Natuurw., Wiskunde en Informatica
    Educational level: Promoted
    Function type: Academic Staff
    Closing date: 28-02-2022
    The Van’t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences invites applications for a faculty position in Photochemistry. The position is open to candidates starting at the level of assistant or associate professor via a tenure track up to more experienced senior candidates at full professor level. The institute strives for a better gender balance in its staff. We therefore strongly encourage women to apply for this position.

    The Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is located at the vibrant Amsterdam Science Park. HIMS is one of eight institutes of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) Faculty of Science. With around 140 employees, HIMS carries out internationally high-quality chemical research and provides education within various university programs.

    The core objective of HIMS is to understand and predict the behaviour of molecules in increasingly complex processes and systems. To reach these goals, research at HIMS houses four strong sub-disciplines (Analytical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Molecular Photonics and Synthesis & Catalysis) that operate all at the forefront of their respective field and together provide a unique synergy for designing, creating, characterizing and understanding molecular systems. This combined expertise allows HIMS to contribute significantly to solving fundamental scientific problems and to addressing societal challenges in the areas of sustainability, energy, and health. The HIMS portfolio reflects a healthy balance between publicly funded curiosity-driven research and application-oriented research with private (co-) funding.

    What are you going to do

    Research at the HIMS is focused on the research programs Chemistry of Complex Systems and Materials, Chemistry for Sustainability, and Chemistry of Biomolecular Systems. Photochemistry is a key discipline in all these research programs. In order to reinforce and extend our expertise in this area, we seek candidates with a strong background in Experimental Molecular Photosciences preferably using original molecular design and spectroscopy. The photochemical research area lends itself preeminently for knowledge utilization in other disciplines. Although the candidate will in first instance be embedded in the Molecular Photonics group, which provides state-of-the-art facilities for molecular spectroscopy, it is therefore expected that the candidate will proactively set up collaborations with the other research groups in the institute (Synthesis and Catalysis, Analytical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry). Similarly, there are excellent possibilities for collaborations with the UvA’s Institute of Physics and the Life and Health Science Institutes.

    You will/tasks:
    As faculty member at HIMS we expect you to:
    • be(come) a renouwned scientist, resulting in acquisition of (personal) research grants, high impact publications and invited lectureres;
    • actively participate in the chemistry related education programmes;
    • increase the visibility and impact of your research by initiating and joining in (inter)national public-private as well as academic research programmes.
    • promote the societal relevance of your research and contribute to outreach activities;
    • contribute to the organisation of the institute, for exmple by participating in working groups and committees, in de domains of teaching, research and management;
    • become a role model in your field;
    • you will be selected on your scientific track record and on your vision for the fuutre research, as well as on your teaching achievements, qualifications, and vision for future teaching.

    What do we require of you

    • You have a strong background, experience, skills and expertise in photochemical research, as evidenced by a track record of publications in renowned journals, and contributed and/or invited talks at international conferences/workshops in line with your career stage.

    Our offer

    We focus on early career candidates who can start as a Tenure Track candidate at the level of Assistant professor. However, we would welcome applications from more experienced candidates on an Associate or Full professorship level too. Depending on candidates’ entry-level a tailor-made appointment will be agreed.
