    Water and Sanitation Advisor (100%)

    Water and Sanitation Advisor (100%)

    ( WatSan Advisor: Supporting Regular Operations )

    Based in Amsterdam

    Position within the organisation

    The Public Health Department (PHD) of the MSF Operational Centre Amsterdam (OCA) supports the overall purpose of MSF, providing medical and public health leadership for the organisation. The department is responsible for providing strategic direction and integrated advice on medical and public health issues to the field and headquarters. The PHD plays a key role in developing and maintaining the medical humanitarian identity and image of MSF-OCA, and in continuing to develop and improve intervention strategies so as to be relevant and effective.

    The department is made up of a group of generalist Health Advisors (based in Amsterdam and Berlin) and medical and public health specialists (paediatrics, nutrition, water and sanitation, mental health, HIV/TB, etc.) so as to provide expert support in a range of fields. The Manson Unit, a medical unit based in MSF-UK, focuses mainly on support to tuberculosis and epidemiology. The WatSan Advisor will report to the IPC & WatSan team Coordinator

    Main Responsibilities and activities

    *
    Contributes to the development of mission strategies, objectives, activities and resources with field team and HQ operation and medical support teams.

    *
    Provides technical and strategic support to assigned missions from HQ and through field visits. Also, mentors WatSan field staff in their missions.

    *
    Actively monitors quality of WatSan programmes through reports, (de) briefings, field visits and regular communication with the field and suggest adjustments when required.

    *
    May contribute to assessment and/or intervention in emergencies as WatSan Co-ordinator in early phases when in the field

    *
    Contributes to the development of relevant tools (guidelines, evaluations and technical support documents), contributing to emergency preparedness and emergency stocks reviews, design/support of operational research projects and development of vision documents.

    *
    Gives expert advice and technical support to colleagues across departments

    *
    Develops and facilitates WatSan staff trainings.

    *
    Contributes to the development of the pool of WatSan staff in MSF OCA.

    *
    Participates in representing the WatSan team and PHD internally and the organisation externally from a Water and Sanitation perspective.

    Candidate Profile

    *
    University degree in Water and Sanitation, preferably Public Health Engineering or Environmental Health; Master degree is a plus.

    *
    Minimum 3 years field experience with MSF or other NGO in co-ordinator position in the field of WatSan ;

    *
    Flexibility to travel and support projects (up to 40% maximum of the job will be spent on project visits);

    *
    MSF experience is preferred

    *
    Humanitarian operation and interventions in healthcare settings experiences are a must; affinity with the principles and objectives of MSF’s work;

    *
    Strong coaching and mentoring skills with adequate learning and development experience to develop content and teach at internal and external courses.

    *
    Medical waste management and health related hazardous waste disposal including high temperature incineration are a benefit.

    *
    Fluency in written and spoken English is required, French and/or Arabic are preferred, (Dutch is not required).

    *
    A strategic thinker, good team-player, flexible, and with good communication skills.

    We offer

    A Dutch employment contract from 1 November 2022, based on 40 hours per week. The contract is for one year with renewal option.    

    A gross monthly salary in scale 7 with a current salary range between 3,488 and 4,980 euro depending on relevant work experience, based on a fulltime appointment.
