    Two tenure track Assistant Professor positions in Genome Biology and Epigenetics

    The newly-formed division of Genome Biology and Epigenetics (GBE) is looking for two ambitious and enthusiastic scientists to strengthen its research and teaching activities. You will be given the opportunity to establish your own independent research group and to participate in educating the next generation of scientists.

    We are particularly looking for candidates with a strong interest in mammalian gene regulation, chromatin biology, epigenetics and/or genome organization. Ideally, you combine quantitative approaches (genomics, proteomics, microscopy) in mammalian cell systems and/or organoids with computational data analysis to understand biological processes. For one of the two positions, we particularly encourage applications from candidates focused on computational/modelling approaches and software development to study gene regulation and genome function.

    You are encouraged to acquire external funding for new research projects through national and international grant opportunities and to supervise the research of Bachelor’s and Master’s students, PhD candidates, and Postdoctoral fellows. The teaching includes general and specialized biology courses related to your field of interest, and you will also have the opportunity to establish new courses.

    You will become part of the dynamic and inspiring Life Sciences community at the Utrecht University campus. Interaction with other groups in the Institute (IBB, see below), Department, Faculty of Science, neighboring institutes (Utrecht Medical Center, Hubrecht Institute, Princess Maxima Center), and national and international groups with similar research interests will be highly encouraged.

    You will start as an Assistant Professor, tenure track, with a career development plan that outlines the goals in research, teaching, and personal development. Upon a positive evaluation, you will be awarded a permanent position.

    Profiel

    We are looking for team players who think critically and creatively and who work organized and efficient. Next to that, you have the following qualifications and characteristics:

    • You hold a PhD degree in molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, biochemistry, or a related field;
    • You have experience in applying quantitative methods (genomics, proteomics, microscopy) and data analysis;
    • You have a vision on future research directions in your own area of expertise and have experience in publishing impactful science;
    • You are fluent in English, both in speech and writing;
    • You have an affinity for teaching and supervision. Experience with innovation in education is appreciated.

    Aanbod
    • two full-time tenure track positions for five years. Both positions will be independently subject to a mid-term evaluation after approximately 2.5 years and an end-term evaluation. If evaluations are positive after five years, the positions become permanent;
    • a full-time gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience -that ranges between €3,821 and €5,230 (scale 11 at the level of Assistant Professor (universitair docent; UD) according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (CAO);
    • 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year;
    • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities.

    In addition to the employment conditions laid down in the CAO for Dutch Universities, Utrecht University has a number of additional arrangements. These include agreements on professional development, leave arrangements and sports. We also give you the opportunity to expand your terms of employment yourself via the Employment Conditions Selection Model. This is how we like to encourage you to continue to grow.

    Over de organisatie The Genome Biology & Epigenetics (GBE) is embedded within the Institute of Biodynamics and Biocomplexity - an inspiring and highly interactive scientific environment covering various disciplines ranging from Developmental Biology, Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Biophysics, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. The GBE aims to answer fundamental questions of molecular biology such as: “How are genes switched on and off” and “What defines the identity of a cell?”. Towards this, we combine various experimental strategies, including genome and epigenome engineering, genome-wide studies, proteomics, single-cell measurements and computational modelling.

    The Department of Biology consists of 12 research divisions, which are organized within two institutes: the Institute of Biodynamics and Biocomplexity (IBB) and the Institute of Environmental Biology (IEB). The department of Biology coordinates the teaching of the Bachelor’s programme in Biology, as well as the Master’s programmes and PhD courses that are offered through the Graduate School of Life Sciences. Each Institute promotes the maintenance of a high-quality and interactive research environment.

    At the Faculty of Science there are 6 departments to make a fundamental connection with: Biology, Chemistry, Information and Computing Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Physics. Each of these departments is made up of distinct institutes which work together to focus on answering some of humanity’s most pressing problems. More fundamental still are the individual research groups – the building blocks of our ambitious scientific projects. Find out more about us.

    Utrecht University is a friendly and ambitious university at the heart of an ancient city. We love to welcome new scientists to our city – a thriving cultural hub that is consistently rated as one of the world’s happiest cities. We are renowned for our innovative interdisciplinary research and our emphasis on inspirational research and excellent education. We are equally well-known for our familiar atmosphere and the can-do mentality of our people. This lively and inspiring academic environment attracts professors, researchers and PhD candidates from all over the globe, making both the University and the Faculty of Science a vibrant international community and wonderfully diverse.
