    Professor of Responsible Consumption

    The University of Amsterdam is a world-leading, research-intensive, internationally orientated university, highly ranked in both QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

    The Section Marketing (just over 23 fte, including 7 PhD students) at the ABS is responsible for teaching, research, and valorisation in the disciplines of marketing and digital business. Teaching and Research focuses on making a positive societal and professional impact. The Center for Responsible Consumption aims to facilitate discussion between consumers, companies, academics, and other stakeholders on the need to change consumption behaviour, resulting in joint research and teaching projects. It will focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and research and cross-pollination across stakeholder groups. With the knowledge generated from research companies and policymakers, the Center can stir the behaviour of companies and consumers to a lower footprint consumer lifestyle.

    The university is looking for an outstanding scholar in responsible consumption, who is passionate about delivering world-leading research and exceptional student experience. This role is particularly suitable for an enthusiastic academic leader who shows willingness and ability to position in the new Center of Responsible Consumption and contribute to its visibility and recognition within the University of Amsterdam and beyond. Moreover, the Professor will help strengthen teaching programmes in this area across undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate programmes and to build capacity in the Center of Responsible Consumption.

    Profile of the Professor

    The appointee should have the following qualifications and experience:

    • A PhD as well as an established, leading international academic reputation in Responsible Consumption and Marketing;
    • An academic title on at least the level of Associate Professor or equivalent;
    • A significant quantity of A* equivalent published research within the discipline;
    • Ability to connect at a high level with the business community, and policymakers, as well as ability to recognize the interests of consumers and other stakeholders;
    • Ability to translate insights from research into advice and applications for practitioners and initiate research dissemination activities, both for academics and practitioners (seminar series, international workshops);
    • Ability to lead, supervise and initiate original research projects (mentor junior researchers, apply for research grants, and supervise PhD students);
    • Affinity with fundraising (2nd and 3rd stream funding) and philanthropy;
    • Inspiring lecturer and public speaker who is willing to occupy a proactive role in the development and implementation of new Responsible Consumption & Marketing programmes;
    • Evidence of a broad international network, evident in joint work, invitations to address conferences, membership of editorial boards, and participation in international workshops or conferences;
    • Ability to be part of the Center of Responsible Consumption and to initiate (academic and public) research-based events;
    • Willingness to contribute to the public debate on Responsible Consumption and Marketing.
