    Powertrain System Architecture, Modeling, and Controls : Battery Algorithms Internship

    Location: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
    Duration: 5-6 months

    The internship assignment
    The Tesla vehicle control systems team works to model, design, simulate, and help implement and calibrate sophisticated algorithms for various subsystems in our cars. From battery management algorithms, torque production, vehicle dynamics, thermal management, or even making falcon doors open gracefully, the team develops control algorithms critical to the awesome experience of driving a Tesla.

    As a member of the controls group, you will contribute to model, develop, specify, and implement control and estimation algorithms in our high voltage battery. The internship will expose you to real world challenges and projects and you will learn how algorithms go from the lab to millions of products.

    Learning goals & Tasks
    • Build tools to evaluate performance and deficiencies of existing algorithms (via simulation, lab data or vehicle data collection)
    • Support development of BMS algorithms from cell capacity, impedance, energy, and degradation estimation to diagnostics of sensors, cells and battery pack components.
    • Explore ideas for algorithm improvements and new features: Create models, test concepts in simulation or on pack data, write testing code, etc.
    • Work cross-functionally with cell modeling, firmware, and battery testing organizations. Put in practice technical communication and presentation skills.

    • Working towards a degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical, Automotive Engineering, Physics or equivalent.
    • Strong background in linear systems, state-estimation, first principles design/analysis, and real-world implementation of control systems.
    • Proficiency with creating and using dynamic models of mechanical, electrical, or thermal systems, in Matlab/Simulink.
    • Basic understanding of li-ion cells and BMS algorithms.
    • Strong willingness to collaborate cross-functionally, work hands-on, and dive into open-ended projects in a fast-paced environment.
    • Proficient written and verbal communications skills in English.
