Postdoc position: deep learning models for the implementation of parotid gland stem cell sparing radiotherapy to prevent permanent xerostomia.
The most-reported side-effect in patients treated with radiotherapy for head and neck cancer is dry-mouth syndrome (xerostomia), which might be permanent and has major impact on quality of life. However, preservation of parotid gland stem cells, located near the main parotid gland ducts might enable regeneration of glandular tissue and function. The relation between dose to the parotid gland and its stem cells, and its long-term function remains poorly understood preventing clinicians from using effective stem cell sparing treatment techniques. Therefore the aim of this project is to develop and validate prediction models that describe the role of the parotid gland stem cells in the development of therapy-induced xerostomia, and can be used directly in clinical practice to improve patient care.
You will develop these models together with a PhD-student, dedicated to this research project. Your tasks as a postdoctoral researcher will especially include the development of advanced models based on baseline patient characteristics with the addition of radiomics derived from multimodality imaging (CT, CBCT, MRI, PET) which are assessed before, during and after the course of radiation. You will be using techniques such as multi-level model analysis machine learning techniques (e.g. deep learning).
