Postdoc position in Cellular senescence and age-related path...
Cellular senescence is a complex tumor-suppressive mechanism induced by many different stresses. Senescent cells are characterized by growth arrest, changes in morphology and gene expression, and the secretion of inflammatory cytokines, proteases and other molecules that can alter the tissue microenvironment (a phenomenon termed the senescence-associated secretory phenotype or SASP). Senescent cells increase with age, and are evident at sites of numerous age-related pathologies and pre-cancerous lesions. This notion led to the identification of various pharmaceutical and nutraceutical strategies to interfere with the detriment of senescent cells.
Recent results from our laboratory has shown that senescent cells prematurely accumulate in tissues exposed to chemotherapeutic agents where they contribute to short- and long-term side effects of the treatment.
The proposed project aims to characterize induction of senescence in organisms exposed to some of the most common class of chemotherapeutic agent which belong to the family of anthracyclines. Major focus will be on identifying what senescence-associated phenotypes develop in mouse tissues after treatment, and perform validation using human specimens. In parallel, we will study the effect of interfering with senescent cells using senolytic compounds, in particular in the context of accelerated aging syndromes.
