Currently, we have a 4-year position for a highly-motivated and creative PhD student for research on transfusion related acute lung injury (TRALI). TRALI is one of the leading causes of blood transfusion related morbidity and mortality world-wide, without available therapies. We have several pre-clinical models (endothelial and animal models) of TRALI running investigating the pathophysiology and potential preventive and therapeutic strategies for this life threatening syndrome. There are several research questions that need to be answered in this project, which include but are not limited to: 1. to provide proof of concept that in multiple transfused patients, donor human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I, II and human neutrophil antigen (HNA) antibodies are able to induce TRALI via circulating infused leukocytes of other donors 2. to identify the presence of non-HLA, non-HNA antibodies in blood products and investigate their contribution to the onset of TRALI. The PhD student will be responsible for conducting laboratory experiments. The experiments will be performed at Sanquin Research, Amsterdam and will be supervised by dr. R. Kapur and Prof. dr. A.P. Vlaar. In addition to the research, the PhD student will be responsible for writing reports and scientific articles, giving presentations and will be participating in national and international scientific meetings. As a student in the AMC graduate school the PhD student will have access to further training and development. We offer a challenging learning environment in a young team. The PhD student will have significant interaction with the other PhD students of our research group.

Number of hours is 28-36 hours per week / 0.9-1.0 fte
We offer a contract for a year (12 months) with the intention to be extended for another 36 months.
Note: A physician (position: physician-researcher) will start at € 3.196 (plus any years of experience as a physician, with a maximum of and € 4.611).
Additional benefits include an 8.3% end-of-year bonus and 8.0% holiday pay.
The base salary does not include holiday pay (8%) and a year-end bonus (8.3%).

The Intensive Care department of the Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam and Sanquin National Blood Bank occupy a leading position internationally in its field of research and participate in a large number of cooperative programs with universities, research institutes and industry. One of the main research lines is the broad field of transfusion medicine. The research group of the Department of Intensive Care and the Laboratory of Experimental Intensive Care and Anesthesiology, together with Sanquin National Blood Bank (Sanquin Research), exists of a multidisciplinary team with backgrounds in internal medicine, anesthesiology, intensive care medicine, biochemistry, artificial intelligence, immunohematology, molecular cell biology and blood cell research.
