    What does this job entail?
    The Korteweg-de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI) of the University of Amsterdam invites you to apply for a PhD position. You will work on the project entitled “Counting colorings using complex dynamics”. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated applicant with a good background in graph theory, theoretical computer science or complex dynamical systems. In particular, some knowledge of graph polynomials and partition functions will be appreciated. The project is centered around determining the location of the complex zeros of the partition function of the Potts model on bounded degree graphs using techniques from complex dynamical system, combinatorics and statistical physics.
    What do you have to offer?
    • You will perform research on the project 'Counting colorings using complex dynamics';
    • You will be part of the discrete mathematics group with its senior and junior members;
    • You will contribute to educational programmes at the University of Amsterdam.
    In addition, you have:
    • A Master’s degree in mathematics (to be completed before the start of the project);
    • A strong interest in graph polynomials, algorithms, or complex dynamics, and;
    • Excellent writing and communication skills in English.
    Experience in teaching is a plus.
    What can we offer you?
    We offer a temporary contract for 38 hours per week for the duration of 4 years (the initial contract will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it will be extended for a total duration of 4 years). This should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). We will draft an educational plan that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. The starting date is flexible, but preferably September 1st 2022.

    Your salary, depending on your relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between €2395 to €3061 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) is applicable.
