What is Shea? Another name for Shea tree is Karité tree. This tree only grows in a 300 km wide strip from Senegal to Western Sudan on the African Savannah. The tree can grow enormously high (15 meters high) and old (more than 200 years). Only after 15 years do plum-like fruit grow on the tree. And the kernels of this fruit, also called shea nuts, is what it's all about. The nuts consist of up to 50% rich fat. The collection of these nuts is mainly done by the women from the villages and are then further processed by us into shea butter and subsequently fractionated into different shea fractions. The income from the sales of shea nuts is an important part of the family-income in the Savannah in West Africa.
