    Lecturer Digital Expertise

    Lecturer Digital Expertise

Faculty/Services: Faculteit der Natuurw., Wiskunde en Informatica
    Educational level: Master
    Function type: Academic Staff
    Closing date: 21 december 2021
Are you inspired by using technology to support solving major societal problems ranging from climate change to social inequality and do you have a firm background in computational methods, programming skills (Python) and knowledge of machine learning techniques? Is didactic innovation close to your heart, then check out what we offer.

September 2022 is the starting date of our new, international bachelor programme Computational Social Science.

Computational Social Science is a relatively new and growing field. It makes sense of social phenomena, based on social data such as digitised and born-digital records ‘about humans’, social media data and sensor data. It combines theories, concepts, and methods from the social sciences and humanities, and the computational sciences. It involves creating viable datasets out of messy, real world data; it involves developing the tools and techniques necessary to analyse these data to tell us something about the world, through explanation and prediction; and (we would like to emphasize) it offers opportunities to learn and make the world a better place by testing and implementing (digital or data-driven) interventions.

The programme has an innovative didactic structure which is project-driven, often in relation with external parties, and offers 'just-in-tine', blended learning. The students are organized in groups of about 20-25 students who are closely guided and monitored by their own tutor.

One of the learning trajectories in this programme is Digital Expertise which encompasses the programming and computational skills, the knowledge of datascience and machine learning techniques, and modeling and simulation skills.

What are you going to do

For this programme you will firstly prepare the necessary learning materials for the Digital Expertise (DE) trajectory (based on existing learning modules), coordinate the DE activities with the activities of other learning trajectories, and implement the learning activities from September 2022 onwards. The teaching itself will be supported by several student assistants who carry out the practical sessions under your supervision. Besides you will organize input and lectures from available research staff. We offer you a chance to help shape this innovative, interdisciplinary programme. Your contribution in connection with the core team of the programme and research staff will impact its detailed contents and didactics. You will be embedded in an environment at the Faculty of Science (FNWI) which has experience and expertise in developing modules in these areas. Besides you will participate in a wider circle of interdisciplinarity where you will collaborate with colleagues from the social sciences and humanities.

What do we require of you

You look forward to applying your knowledge of the relevant areas mentioned above, combined with an interest in didactic innovation to the programme of Computational Social Science.

    Your experience and profile.
    • You have an academic background in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence or a related field.
    • You have an interdisciplinary mindset and are open to diverse perspectives from different disciplinary angles.
    • You have teaching experience at bachelor level.
    • You like working in a team and with students.
    • Experience in developing teaching material (practical exercises) is welcomed.
    • You are sufficiently fluent in both English and Dutch or if lacking Duth proficiency willing to learn Dutch
    • You are willing to acquire a Basic Teaching Certiicate (BKO)

    Our offer

We offer an employment contract for four years with a probationary period of two months, preferably starting on 1 March 2022. The employment contract is for 38 hours a week.

Your salary, depending on your relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between €2,836 to €4,474 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) is applicable.

The Faculty of Science offers you a four-year contract, which includes 0.1fte dedicated to training and development. This combination of working as a lecturer while following training is called the Lecturer Development Programme (Docent Ontwikkel Programma, DOP). The purpose of the DOP is to optimise your position on the job market (deployability and opportunities) once your temporary employment comes to an end. During the course of your four-year contract, you will follow training together with other lecturers; this will include the opportunity to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). Together with your supervisor, you will draw up a Personal Development Plan (Persoonlijk Ontwikkelplan, POP) detailing the specifics of your customised programme.
