    Are you looking for a challenging job in a dynamic setting? The AI, Media & Democracy Lab is looking for a Lab Manager.

    The AI, Media & Democracy Lab is a collaboration between the University of Amsterdm (UvA), Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) and Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI). Together with media partners, societal partners and the City of Amsterdam, participants in the lab work together on how AI and digital technology are transforming media and democracy.

    What are you going to do?

    As a Lab Manager of the AI, Media & Democracy Lab, you will be working closely together with researchers from the different departments and the media partners, societal partners and City of Amsterdam. An important part of your activities will be to build and organise the lab community, reach out to, and maintain relationships with external partners, represent the lab in planning meetings, e.g. in the context of the NLAIC ELSA Steering Committee, and help us organise internal and external events and outreach activities. As the acquisition of external funds is an important part of the activities of the lab, you are expected to support the researchers in the formation of consortia and writing of research grants, in close cooperation with the involved partners and the Amsterdam IXA Exchange. As the first contact person for the project you are someone with excellent communication skills.

    • organize the activities of the lab;
    • set up a newsletter and social media;
    • maintain contacts with external stakeholders and act as first contact for the project;
    • community organisation; management of relations with project co-workers and work with colleagues in the lab;
    • prepare and organize project meetings and assisting in (the organization of) dissemination activities like workshops, website, conferences and publications;
    • financial management and reporting, in close cooperation with the UvA project control department;
    • support in acquisition and proposal writing.

    What do we require?

    Experience with scientific research and affinity with the subject matter is an advantage. Experience in project management and in writing project proposals and understanding subsidy schemes and understanding of project administrative issues, finances, procedures, legal issues, and organization is a must, as are strong communication and organisational skills.

    Furthermore you:
    • are fluently in Dutch/English speaking/writing;
    • are capable of operating both independently with own authority, based on knowledge, expertise and experience, as within a team where you are willing to handle each other’s work where necessary;
    • are capable of working independently with multiple stakeholders, both inside and outside the university;
    • have a creative mind in setting up new projects and converting ideas into practice;
    • have a demonstrate a service-oriented attitude towards the goal of the consortium and proposal;
    • are willing to perform both high- and low-level tasks in relevant projects;
    • are capable of maintaining a high level, sometimes intercultural network.

    Our offer

    We offer a temporary full-time or part-time contract (32 – 38 hours) for the period of one year. Preferred starting date is 1 March 2022. Upon positive evaluation and satisfactory performance, you will be offered a permanent contract.

    The gross monthly salary based on full-time employment (38 hours per week) ranges from €2.836 up to a maximum of €4.474 (salary scale 10). This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus. The starting salary will be based on qualifications, expertise and relevant experience. The profile Projectmanager is applicable in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU)

    About us

    The AI, Media & Democracy Lab is a collaboration between the UvA’s research teams Human(e) AI and ICDS (Information, Communication and the Data Society), the CWI’s research groups Human-Centered Data Analytics, Distributed and Interactive Systems and Intelligent and Autonomous Systems and the HvA lectorates Responsible IT, Network Cultures, Civic Interaction Design, Crossmedia, and Visual Methodologies.

    The AI, Media & Democracy Lab focuses on how AI and digital technology are transforming media and democracy. The researchers will tackle specific issues surrounding the use of AI in the media, such as ways to develop more people-oriented and diverse systems, or the possible role of chatbots in news provision. In addition, they and the various partners in the lab will think about what the media of tomorrow should look like. To this end, the lab will bring together fundamental and applied research in the fields of law, ethics, communication science, media studies and computer science.
