ArtEZ University of the Arts is one of the largest art academies in the Netherlands. ArtEZ offers bachelor and master programmes in the fields of visual art, fashion, design, architecture, music, dance and theatre. It’s broad range of courses offers scope for multidisciplinary collaboration. The university has approximately 3000 students and 900 lecturers and other staff. Education is provided in Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle. The Executive Board and the supporting services are concentrated in Arnhem.

Head of Product Design (0,6 – 0,7 FTE)
The department‘Some dream, some do, some do both’ is the central ethos of the department. With a long history going back more than 50 years, the department has educated many generations and has dynamically evolved in accordance with the ever-changing nature of design. Curiosity, ambition and making are fundamental in our work ethos and our energy is focussed on realising the dreams we share for design. Beside developing artistic expertise and imagination, design skills and knowledge of materials, the program stimulates students to apply design across an increasingly diverse and interdisciplinary domain. Product Design strives to function as a laboratory for experimenting with the role of design within society and contribute in transformative, imaginative, and responsible ways.
The department is close-knit and thrives on collaboration and enthousiasm, and with a flexible mindset this results in initiating stimulating projects, residencies, fieldwork and partnerships. The Product Design team and students are the driving force but our community goes beyond the building, stretching the borders of design and building relations with local and global partners. Your profile As a professional in the field of design, you are well informed about developments in the field and familiar with the broader sector and international discourse. Working with a team from practice, we understand the importance of being active in the profession, and ask you to find a balance in continuation of practice combined with the responsibilities of leading our department. As team, we are open to explore new frameworks that join your practice with leadership and education.
You are educated at the HBO + / University level, and have expertise in academic leadership to develop the department Product Design into a progressive and highly regarded course with a forward-thinking vision. You preferably have a teaching qualification and/or BKE certificate or are prepared to invest in this in due course.
You have strong social abilities, a flexible mindset, you are empathic and constructive in your work. You enjoy working with students and colleagues and are committed to developing a new generation of design practitioners. You work effectively and respectfully with a wide range of people of different backgrounds and experiences and you are willing to utilize your professional network and expertise to the benefit of the students.
You can transfer your vision to others and guide, enthuse, and connect people in this. You are skilled and mindful in management and organizational tasks. Being a part of the broader team within our academy, you have an eye for the bigger picture, and you show inventiveness in working on answers to issues. You communicate easily and clearly, both verbally and textually, and know how to convey the programme's strengths, both inside and outside the academy's walls.
You understand how important your presence at the academy is an are willing to work flexible hours.
Your responsibilities We are looking for an experienced design professional to become the new Head of Product Design ArtEZ and develop a vision that builds new futures. As Head, you have a clear understanding of the profession of design, knowledge of materials and of the social, technological, and ecological discourse. With a co-creative spirit, you will lead the process of applying vision, content, collaborations, and steering educational, innovative methods. You do this in consultation with the students, lecturers and management, in line with the critical developments in design and conform the long-term visions of ArtEZ and the Academy of Art & Design Arnhem.
There is a wide diversity of knowledge and skills in the department, both within the department’s team and in the relations with external partners and network. Building further upon these elements is an important part of a new Head’s assignment. The program, which is fully in English, requires thorough involvement with the students and strong commitment. The transfer of traditional and new knowledge and skills and the development of future ones need your particular attention.
Diversity is crucial for our department, not only within the domain of design but also socially, contributing to a learning, resilient community of people coming from various backgrounds. It is essential as Head, to build an open community and have a good sense of intercultural awareness and communication competencies.
You will be involved in appointing a new department coordinator, which will give the space to build your own way of working and organizing. You represent the department inside and outside of ArtEZ. You work with your director and your fellow heads to coordinate the courses and disciplines within Art & Design Arnhem. Together you are responsible for further developing and propagating the identity of the academy. You are also responsible for the finances and staff of your programme and you are accountable to your director.
You will be given a temporary contract for 1 year for 0.6 - 0,7 FTE. Upon mutual satisfaction, there is the possibility of a permanent contract. The gross monthly salary is a minimum of € 5,092.01 and a maximum of € 6,202.13 (Position Head of Department B, scale 13) based on a 36-hour working week. Besides an informal and open working atmosphere, we offer attractive employment conditions in accordance with the CAO-HBO such as a holiday allowance of 8%, an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and good study and development opportunities. The work takes place mainly at the Arnhem location.
