    Environmental & Social Operations Officer (32-40 hours)

    IDH is an organization (Foundation) that works with businesses, financiers, governments, and civil society to realize sustainable trade in global value chains (e.g. tea, coffee, cocoa, palm oil, cotton, etc).

    IDH’s activities focuses on:

    • Convening: IDH brings public private stakeholders together, building trust, aligning different interests, and creating common language and understanding of the most pressing sustainability issues in a sector or a region.
    • Co-financing: IDH co-finances testing (and analyzing) new sustainable business models in sectors and landscapes.
    • Learning & Innovating: through prototyping IDH adapts, learns and innovates its approaches to make them more cost efficient, economically viable, scalable and ready to be embedded and institutionalized by others. IDH publishes insight reports, monitors progress and commissions frequently 3rd party impact research.

    The role

    As an E&S Operations Officer, you will focus primarily on IDH’s co-financing projects in global value chains, which aim to have a positive impact on three Impact Themes: Better Income, Better Jobs and Better Environment, with a focus on Gender as a cross-cutting impact theme (for more information, go to

    You will have a central role within our project design and implementation process and will be at the core of our operational processes. In close consultation with our business units and with support from the operations managers, you ensure that the quality of our projects is further improved. You oversee the evaluation of the environmental and social compliance of our projects, based on our environmental and social management system, policy and tools, providing guidance to program teams. You are the organization’s risk manager, leading and organizing country and business unit risk sessions, keeping the risk register up to date and creating risk-awareness in the organization. Furthermore, you run the investment committee secretariat, reviewing project proposals, ensuring the quality of compliance and project risk assessment.

    In close liaison with the Global operations director, you support the continuous improvement of policies, processes and templates and provide training to the rest of the organization.

    Who you are

    You are an E&S professional who is able to quickly understand how organizations operate and identify operational bottlenecks. You like to find solutions for challenges and give pragmatic advice to colleagues from different backgrounds and cultures. You are flexible but also have a critical mind and enjoy working in a dynamic environment that values continuously implementing improvements. You find it easy to self-organise and prioritize.

    You have experience in n social and/or environmental sciences with a keen interest in compliance & risk management. You can conduct compliance audits and interpret these reports for various departments. You execute projects quickly, are result-oriented, flexible and have the skills and attitude necessary to mitigate IDH’s risks.

    What you bring

    • At least 2-3 years of relevant working experience in an international environment, preferably working with or in African, Asian and/or South American countries
    • Knowledge of international good practices for management of environmental and social risks related to sustainability programs
    • Experience with reviewing and supporting development and execution of environmental and social risk assessments and the application of respective safeguarding instruments as part of investment processes
    • Experience in compliance audit, reporting and risk analysis and ability to work on several work streams under time pressure
    • Excellent skills in Excel is an added advantage
    • Strong communication skills, fluent in English (both written and verbal)
    • Pro-active, entrepreneurial, and independent mindset with a strong problem solving attitude

    What we offer

    IDH offers a challenging position within an enthusiastic and passionate team, on strategic and dynamic topics. As an IDH team member you can contribute to positive global sustainability change. The position is for 40 hours a week and initially for a period of 1 year, with the possibility of extension.

    We offer a gross monthly salary of EUR 2798 to EUR 3498 (based on 40 hours per week) and solid fringe benefits, including a good pension scheme.
