    Director R&D IOL Development

    Johnson & Johnson Surgical Vision is recruiting for a Director R&D IOL Development, located in Groningen, Netherlands.

    The Director R&D will provide leadership, vision, and direction to the development and life cycle management of Intraocular Lenses and new product process engineering. This leader will drive functional excellence in design control activities and will collaborate across the surgical vision and vision care divisions, and broader J&J sectors, to optimize R&D functional processes, define innovation strategic roadmaps, and assure adequate resourcing across R&D teams to drive progress and stage-gate attainment in product and technology development projects. This person is responsible for effective people leadership, up to Sr. Manager level staff. Conducts high-level planning, identifies and implements current and future capability requirements (people and equipment) to ensure people and resources are managed as well as R&D program definition and management coordination while providing strategic business decision ownership for a wide range of Ophthalmic core products and all related technologies. Leads, and develops direct reports in management and senior technical career tracks. Provides technical guidance for their organization to ensure market-leading technology and product development.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Builds strategic alliances with universities, research institutions, and key product development and engineering vendors.
    • Collaborates and coordinates across functional areas, business units, and/or geographies to achieve Division goals
    • Monitors and ensures compliance with company policies and procedures (e.g. compliance with FDA regulations, etc.).
    • Makes and performs operational decisions with a strategic perspective
    • Develops and achieves forward-looking, long-term plans, taking into account business performance and market analysis. Reports progress towards the plan and take actions to achieve and over-achieve targets. Responsible for the development of an annual plan that is consistent with JJVS’s goals and that meets the growth targets of the business. Develops contingency plans given JJVS’s priorities and optimizes workflow and process to meet objectives.
    • Directs activities to ensure new product development activities are achieved within agreed upon scope, timeline, and budget
    • Recruits, coaches and develops organizational talent. Fosters a diverse workplace that enables all participants to contribute to their full potential.
    • Keeps the organization's vision and values at the forefront of decision making and action
    • Demonstrates effective change leadership. Creates an entrepreneurial environment.
    • Builds strategic partnerships to further departmental and organizational objectives. Interacts internally and externally with executive level management, outside regulatory agencies, customers, vendors, and/or suppliers
    • Develops and enhances professional knowledge and relationships with leading scientists, clinicians, and key industry influencers through reading, collaborations, and attending scientific and industry meetings and conferences.
    • Participates in Groningen site leadership team, implementing the organizational policy and ensuring an efficiently functioning site, taking into account corporate guidelines and developments/legislation, etc.a. formulates site objectives based on R&D and Supply Chain business



    • Master level with specialist experience (>10 years) in engineering, optics or physics, Ph.D. or equivalent knowledge required.


    • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple cross functional project teams in taking innovative ideas from concept to market is required.
    • Strong technical and scientific background with a proven engineering approach to problem-solving and issue resolution, combined with a good understanding of the relevant technologies.
    • Demonstrated managerial skill to make and stand by difficult decisions and articulate and inspire a vision for the organization to achieve its long-term success.
    • Demonstrated experience in recruiting professional staff of a high caliber; providing staff with development opportunities and coaching as well as setting appropriate standards of behavior.


    • Advanced Degree is preferred.
    • Experience in a medical device environment


    • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills in English, and the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization.
    • Ability to travel up to 15%, international and domestic is required
