Director of Communications - Global Energy & Materials
Who You'll Work With
You will be based in one of our office in North America or Europe as part of our Global Energy & Materials (GEM) practice. You will report to the senior partner leading GEM communications and our leader of strategy and operations.
The Global Energy & Materials (GEM) sector is the firm's largest industry practice and encompasses four industry cells: Basic Materials, Chemicals & Agriculture, Electric Power & Natural Gas, and Oil & Gas. The GEM practice serves as an umbrella for our industry cells especially when it comes to developing and implementing our cross-industry initiatives on priority themes such as Sustainability and the Energy Transition, Digital and Analytics, and Transformation.

Our global network of experienced partners and experts works with industry executives in energy and materials industries to address issues including strategy, organization, operations, technology, marketing, sales and risk management. We help clients take a holistic and long-term view of the evolving competitive landscape, especially in light of the energy transition and continued digital transformation of the sector. We work with many high performing iconic companies around functional, business unit and enterprise-wide transformations.
We publish extensively on the key topics relevant for our industries and constantly research the latest ideas and capabilities needed by our industry. We regularly convene industry leaders for exclusive client events and collaborate with energy and materials focused industry associations as well as external media.
What You'll Do
You will serve as a senior reputation and risk counselor to our global GEM practice leadership.
In this role, you will lead our collaborative GEM Reach & Relevance and Communications team working to build our reputation through publishing, media relations, events, content design, external partnerships and reputation risk management. You will also support our leaders with internal communications and be embedded into the firm’s communications function. You will have overall responsibility for developing and implementing a robust global external relations and communications strategic plan coordinated across GEM sub-sectors, regions and industry leadership themes, identifying the right formats and channels, and setting priorities together with GEM and sub-industry leadership.
You will have the opportunity to lead and constantly innovate the global GEM communications organization including media relations, digital media, event content and design, publications and knowledge leadership opportunities as well as shape the practices’ publishing efforts and content marketing strategy in collaboration with our managers of capabilities and knowledge leaders in each sub-industry. You will ensure a leading-edge digital content strategy is in place and executed, provide high-quality writing and editing support or work with McKinsey editors to produce distinctive articles. You will also manage or oversee production and publication of GEM thought leadership (e.g., Global Energy Perspective, industry formats such as McKinsey on Chemicals, commodity-specific compendiums, white papers, commentaries, podcasts, video interviews etc.)
Additionally, you will manage GEM reputation risk management process including reviewing reports, publications, external speech content, etc. and handle reputation risk issues internally and externally. You will work with the Risk function colleagues to facilitate risk reviews in a timely and constructive manner, and act as a thought partner to GEM practice leaders/risk leader and leader of strategy and operations on other key risk issues.
You will facilitate external communications including building relationships with media representatives such as business and industry-specific media, analysts, opinion writers and other key influencers, run targeted media outreach with top tier outlets and secure media coverage in top publications and relevant trade press. You will manage relationships with external partner organizations, academic networks, industry associations and communication advisors, as appropriate and play a lead role in managing GEM/sub-industry presence at high quality events (e.g., Davos, conferences, meetings/events with senior executives and key influencers, speeches / prominent speaking engagements). You will ensure each GEM sub-industry’s global brand promise is well communicated and positioned externally, ensuring superb external reputation.
By leveraging your communications skillset, you’ll ensure clear articulation of a GEM narrative as well consistent communication of image and position to all stakeholders, both internal and external. You will direct and evolve collateral and services such as webpages, practice branding, digital media (LinkedIn) and coordinate across the wider McKinsey organization in addition to supporting the creation/maintenance of GEM CRM and other channels of content dissemination.
You will also provide reputation counselling and coaching to practice leaders and colleagues to ensure they have the capabilities needed to build their reputations. You will advise and coach GEM partners on their communications programs including content delivery. You will develop and execute against plans and budgets for communications and external relations strategies and efforts on global and sub-sector level as well as track progress and impact of actions taken. You will play a lead role in enhancing internal awareness and reputation for the GEM practice including attracting colleagues to our sector, providing a strong voice in continually shaping our GEM purpose, mission and values.
You will lead and coordinate a team of six communications professionals dedicated to supporting GEM. As the team’s leader, you will provide clear objectives and an effective operating model that drives GEM’s reach and relevance priorities, and help each individual member on their professional growth journey.
University degree; advanced degree preferred
10+ years of experience in communications, external relations or marketing ideally with McKinsey or in a leading energy, chemicals, agriculture or materials company or another professional services firm (e.g., leading consulting, investment bank, accounting or law firm); experience working in the context of the energy transition is a plus
Experience strategically applying the full range of marketing/communications channels including digital channels (e.g., web, events, traditional media/analyst relations, social media); ability to demonstrate measurable business impact from marketing and communications activities
Working knowledge of one or more of the energy/materials industries or the ability to come up this learning curve quickly and gain credibility
Ability to cultivate relationships with external parties and journalists
Entrepreneurial mindset and a demonstrated record of driving innovation from the ideation stage through to sustained execution and impact; demonstrates courage to try new things and find creative yet pragmatic ways of creating lasting change in a large organization with decentralized decision-making

Stature and professional experience necessary to interact with partners and senior executives as a peer and thought partner; strong ability to form and share own opinion
Proven track record of attracting, managing and developing exceptional talent; experience in leading and managing high performing teams in the communications, public relations and marketing disciplines for professional services or global energy and materials industries
Ability to work with a global team with members from different backgrounds, ensuring a collaborative leadership and working style
