    Data Scientist Climate and Sustainability

    Imagine…

    … it’s 2030 and the world has taken major steps towards a low carbon economy. Data and analytical tools you developed to measure the climate impact of Rabobank’s clients made this transition possible. Rabobank serves clients in the global food and agricultural supply chain, real estate and SME markets and wants to lead the way to the energy transition. For each of these areas, determining our clients’ carbon footprint and knowing where the opportunities were to decrease emissions were the essential first steps to halting climate change and your work provided the answers.


    As member of the Data Science team, with a focus on economics and sustainability, you’ll work together with 18 other data scientists and over 100 researchers in RaboResearch, the bank’s highly valued knowledge centre. This team generates data-driven insights, proprietary data sets, tools and models. Examples of projects we work on are real-time estimates of consumer expenditure in the Netherlands during Covid-19 lockdowns, based on bank transaction data, and investigating the potential damage to Dutch house foundations resulting from climate change.     Making a difference

    You will be a member of the RaboResearch Data Science team focusing primarily, but not exclusively, on topics related to climate change and sustainability. This includes carbon footprint (forecasting), sustainability analysis based on large dataset and developing client tools, such as sustainability benchmarks. In this role you will:

    • Develop, maintain and help improve unique data sets, models and tools to support stakeholders and clients.

    • Develop models for carbon footprinting and Paris Alignment for different sectors.

    • Work closely together with subject matter experts in quantitative research projects.

    • Respond to information requests and research global and regional sustainability questions in collaboration with the global RaboResearch department.

    • Use your extensive knowledge in modelling and quantitative research skills, to model in a cloud-based environment.

    As a data scientist, you will work in a diverse team with different levels of expertise, cultural backgrounds, gender, etc. Sharing knowledge and experience within this team and with other colleagues within RaboResearch and the bank is key to building an even stronger Data Science team. Our ideal candidate will:

    At RaboResearch we deliver relevant and distinctive insights for the bank and its clients. The different RaboResearch departments cover international food and agribusiness sectors, global financial markets, sustainability and the economies relevant to Rabobank – most importantly, the Netherlands, US, Brazil and Australia. Our forecasts and scenarios are used in key risk processes of the bank and help clients to make decisions in uncertain times. Our thematic research provides a deep understanding of the changes facing both the bank and its clients.

    Complex problem solving, creativity, and client orientation are essential for the role of Data Scientist at RaboResearch. Hence, it is important that you meet the following characteristics:


    Non-technical skills

    • Knowledge or experience of working in climate change and/or sustainability would be an asset

    • Ability to translate stakeholders’ needs for insights into consulting or research projects with a quantitative scope

    • Connecting analytics to strategic insights

    • Ability to work productively in a global team, think critically and debate issues with a team from diverse cultural backgrounds

    • Ability to communicate research results effectively by translating complex models and outputs to clients and stakeholders

    • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships within and outside RaboResearch

    • Fluent in English, both verbally and in writing. Proficiency in Dutch, Portuguese or Spanish is considered an advantage


    Technical skills

    • A Master’s degree or PhD in data science or relevant quantitative discipline

    • A solid foundation of statistics, predictive modelling and machine learning

    • Experience in geospatial data analysis (with GeoPandas/GeoTrellis/GeoPySpark) or natural language processing is a plus

    • Modelling experience in real-life business settings with traditional and algorithmic (machine learning/Bayesian) approaches

    • Experience in big data analytics, including working with SQL and Spark on an Azure-based environment

    • Strong hands-on programming skills (preferably with Python) and experience in deploying models

    • Strong self-learning skills to follow (and to make use of) the latest developments in the fields of modelling and big data development

    What we offer

    • A gross monthly salary between 3.260 and 5.384 (scale 8 and 9), depending on role and seniority level
