    Associate Professor Applied Social Data Science/Computational Social Science

    The Department of Methodology and Statistics is seeking to appoint an Associate Professor Applied Social Data Science. The successful candidate will contribute to our growing research and education programme in Applied Data Science. The department encourages applications both from those trained in social science methodology & statistics, as well as from those with expertise in fields such as computational social science, data science, statistics, and computer science, who would welcome the opportunity to work at the Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences. Among other activities in this area, the department hosts the Social Data Science (SoDa) team as part of ODISSEI, the Dutch national infrastructure for the social sciences; plays a central role in Utrecht University’s focus area Applied Data Science, and provides data science education across all academic levels in a variety of educational programmes.

    The candidate will be employed at the Department of Methodology and Statistics of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences at Utrecht University. We provide teaching in methods and statistics within all Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes of the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences and University College Utrecht. We offer the only two-year Master’s degree programme exclusively focused on methodology and statistics in the social, biomedical, and behavioural sciences in the Netherlands (in cooperation with Twente University and the Biostatistics group of Utrecht University Medical Centre).

    We participate in the one-year interdisciplinary Master's Applied Data Science and in the interdisciplinary minor in Applied Data Science. In collaboration with Statistics Netherlands, we offer a track within our faculty’s Research Master's labelled European Master of Official Statistics, awarded by Eurostat. Finally, we also teach courses for researchers and other professionals as part of the Summer School Utrecht, and we give advice to staff and students with respect to their research activities.

    The research of the broader Department of Methodology and Statistics focuses on methods and techniques for the social and behavioural sciences in a broad sense and comprises topics such as research synthesis techniques, longitudinal studies, SEM and multilevel analyses, survey research, Bayesian statistics, Applied Data Science, and qualitative research. Our department plays an active role in the Utrecht University focus area Applied Data Science and collaborates with the strategic themes Dynamics of Youth and Institutions for Open Societies. In addition, there are many opportunities for collaboration with other fields, such as the Utrecht University Medical Centre, Geosciences, or Computing Sciences.

    The Department of Methodology and Statistics has a job opening for a full-time Associate Professor (tenured) who will contribute to our educational and research programme.

    The position involves 60% teaching/management activities and 40% research time. Core tasks will include:

    • contributing to the curriculum of the Applied Data Science and/or Methodology and Statistics educational programmes;
    • contributing to administration, organization, and management at unit and department level;
    • carrying out and supervising research within the scope of the research executed by the Department of Methodology and Statistics, often in collaboration with other research institutes or societal partners;
    • contributing to the acquisition of substantial external research funding for the benefit of the research programme of the Department of Methodology and Statistics.



    • The candidate has experience with developing and coordinating academic courses, preferably in a team setting. Experience with teaching courses on network analysis, natural language processing, AI for health, spatial data analysis, and/or streaming data analysis is an asset.
    • The candidate is able to provide inspiring lectures and has an eye for the improvement of teaching methods, as evidenced by positive teaching assessments.
    • The candidate holds a Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or is willing to acquire this qualification in the near future.


    • The candidate holds a PhD degree in the field of data science, (social) statistics, computer science, computational social science, or an adjacent field.
    • The candidate has experience in conducting scientific research in the field of applied data science, broadly conceived.
    • The candidate has a clear vision about their own research line and how this fits in with the Department of Methodology and Statistics.
    • The candidate’s work adheres to the highest standards of open science. Their work may comprise non-traditional outputs such as open source software, or impact-related activities.
    • The candidate has demonstrated the ability to (collectively) acquire external research funding.


    • The candidate has excellent communication skills, a proactive work attitude, and is able to work within a team.
    • The candidate is a connecting leader, has a clear vision on academic leadership and experience in supervising more junior staff members, such as PhD students and postdocs.
    • The candidate is willing to learn Dutch. We expect a relevant level of competence within two years of taking up the appointment.
    • The candidate has experience with and an interest in advising students and staff doing substantive social science with respect to methods and techniques of data analysis.


    We offer a full-time permanent (i.e., tenured) position. The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €5,275 and €7,054 (scale 13/14 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.
