    Assistant Professor Data Science

    Campus Fryslân invites applications for a motivated colleague at the level of assistant professor Data Science. You will specifically teach the courses Introduction to Programming in Python, Topics on Data Science in Python, and IT and its Implications. All courses involve conveying both technical skills and critical thinking to students. You are furthermore expected to conduct a number of additional teaching related tasks such as academic advisement and thesis supervision. The position is particularly suited for someone with a background or understanding of the humanities and social sciences, in additional to possessing a solid “data science toolkit”.


    The ideal candidate:

    • has a PhD in Data Science, Critical Data Studies, Science and Technology Studies, Digital Humanities or a comparable domain
    • is able to teach the courses Introduction to Programming, Topics in Data Science, and IT and its Implications from an interdisciplinary and critical perspective
    • has familiarity with current data research techniques and a solid working knowledge of modern programming languages including Python. Being familiar with R would be an asset
    • the willingness to apply an inter- and transdisciplinary perspective to research and education and ability to function well in an interdisciplinary academic environment
    • the capacity to teach bachelor students in small-scale settings
    • an international and proactive outlook fitting a dynamic organisation
    • excellent command of the English language, including good communication skills. Dutch language abilities would be an asset.


    Campus Fryslân is the newest faculty of the University of Groningen, located in Leeuwarden. The faculty is dedicated to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary education and research.     Within Campus Fryslân, you will primarily be working at University College Fryslân (UCF). UCF offers a BSc in Global Responsibility & Leadership, inspired by the UN Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Bachelor is a broad, scientifically rigorous, interdisciplinary programme with three Majors (Responsible Governance, Responsible Humanity, and Responsible Planet) and additional side tracks, amongst one in Data Science. The programme has a strong emphasis on digital skills and leadership development. Through small-scale and intensive education, you will work together with ambitious student-researchers to help them acquire the knowledge and skills that are necessary to design solutions for global challenges and become change agents for sustainable development.

    Conditions of employment

    We offer you in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities:

    • a minimum salary of € 3,807 up to a maximum of € 5,211 (scale 11, assistant professor 2) gross a month on a full-time basis, depending on qualifications and experience
    • a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
    • an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance
    • minimum of 29 holidays and additional 12 holidays in case of full-time employment.

    The position has a 60-40 percent distribution with regard to teaching-research. The post will be established for a fixed term period of 18 months.
